Chef Lamont Smith Sr.
Chef Lamont Smith was born on the South Side of Chicago. Taught by his mother, a Dietitian and grandmother a Health Industry worker, he was equipped early on to hone in on his culinary genius. In 1992, Lamont began working as a Line Server for First Chicago Bank’s employee cafeteria managed by Marriott Foodservice Corporation. During that year, he was promoted to Line Cook, and then, Soup and Saucier Chef. Working hand in hand with renowned Sous and Executive Chefs, Lamont was invited to participate in a pilot Culinary Arts Program sponsored by Marriott Corporation and the Chef’s Guild for Culinary Arts. After finishing 18 months of intensive and detailed study, Lamont earned a Certificate of Completion from the Chef’s Guild for Culinary Arts.
While an employee at Marriott, Chef Lamont also trained at the Palmer House Hilton, Conrad Hilton, Marriott’s Renaissance Hotel, Windham Resorts, and Cielo Restaurant in the Omni Hotel on the Magnificent Mile until he took the leap of faith and ventured out on his own in 1999.
Serving such high clientele in downtown Chicago, Chef Lamont set out to challenge the propensity many working families have to eat unhealthy fast food meals as a quick fix for hunger, and began Upscale Carryout services via Home Chefing. As the business evolved, and additional staff were added, home preparation, lunch, and catering services opened the doors to the first Sizzlin Skillets Restaurant located at 553 E. 79th Street. Three restaurants later, Chef Lamont oversees that the mission is consistent while grooming the business for franchisers and additional expansion.
